Rainfall in the Hutt, Ruamahanga, Manawatu, and Rangitikei river catchments has been low in recent weeks resulting in great autumn fishing conditions and, from many reports, great fishing opportunities.

Recent drift dive surveys of one of Wellington’s main river systems – the Hutt River – suggests the water quality in the catchment is okay, though concerns remain around low flows and water quality issues in the lower reaches, according to Fish & Game.
This breeding season can be best described as wet, wet, wet! It has been great for nesting success in spring and survival of ducks in summer. All this points to good numbers of birds being seen in both the Manawatu and Wairarapa areas, and they are in good condition too.
The last month has seen a drop in temperatures and daylight hours slowly decrease.
Hutt Drift Dives Completed
The next meeting of the Wellington Fish & Game Council will be on Wednesday the 18th April 2012 at the Upper Hutt Cossie Club.
On Monday 20th February, some gravel work began on the Hutt River. This is being carried out just below the Kennedy Good Bridge and is likely to carry on for another two weeks at the most. The aim is to manage the build up of gravel along this section of the river.
